Combining Product Sales with News

(OnlineNewspaper.org) One possibility for the online newspaper is partnering with product companies to offer items for sale in relation to the article being viewed. Google is already doing this in some form with a new type of Adsense. Some people are resistent to this type of advertising because it collects individual shopping preference information in order to deliver the most successful ads. However, such advertising shows promise because millions of people buy products online while too many are still adverse to following an advertisement all the way to the checkout counter.

Interactive Multi-media as the Newspaper

The future of the newspaper is already here. It's complete multimedia delivery of stories using video, photos and sound. It's not enough anymore just to read a story and move on to the next one. News stories shall inject video into printed copy and sounds from the scene of the recorded story. A newspaper will be engaging, no longer a dull instrument of printed material.

Exclusive Content

Offering exclusive content by subscription is an online newspaper model that is working for some web sites. It is also a model worth consideration since the same, generic take of breaking news is found on so many web sites. Most news is underreported and follow-up with more specific details is lagging.

How Online Newspapers Can Make Money

(Onlinenewspaper.org) I am working on a revenue model for onlinenewspapers. This method I believe will be acceptable to consumers and generate respectable if not tremendous ad revenue for online newspapers. Stay tuned! It will be presented here first.

The Five Pound Sunday Paper

(OnlineNewspaper.org) As one ponders the bulk of a Sunday paper sitting on a grocery store rack, it conjures images of a day-long feast of newspaper indulging, and then one remembers they do not have nearly the time of an entire day to leisurely pour over local and world news. We see Sunday editions becoming skinnier with each passing month and of course some will disappear all together, replaced by online editions. Small children today will as adults look back and exclaim, What, they read a newspaper that large? They had that kind of time?

India May Lead World Out of Recession

(OnlineNewspaper.org)The election of a pro-growth prime minister and congress in India caused stocks there to surge yesterday, with optimism it will continue into the future. It seems clear India is poised to leave recession behind since it is a country with enough self-improvement to keep it well busy for years and without dependence on other countries. This strong signal to world markets could be the extra spark needed to further jump-start them, leaving behind the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

About OnlineNewspaper.org

OnlineNewspaper.org is a project by Preston Brady III. I have written for several newspapers including The Tenderloin Times in San Francisco, and Lagniappe, in Mobile. Beta is the word for the moment.

The Incompleteness of News

(OnlineNewspaper.org) Breaking news is too often broken to the point of not being much of a news item at all. For example, the reporting of a death in a community. Someone was found dead in their car. Police do not know or did not say whether foul play is involved. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of kin. Or, an inmate was found hung in his cell. The victim's name is given but there is no additional information. Although a day or two later the news agency reporting these items may follow up with more information, many readers will never see the follow-up.

The Future of News Reporting

(OnlineNewspaper.org) The iReporter model founded by CNN is a glimpse into the future of news reporting. Newspapers, syndicates and television stations are unable to have enough people around the world to report breaking news, although a few syndicates have tried. The iReporter model works but one can imagine future possibilities . . .reporting models that provide even stronger incentive to the reporter. This connects to the idea of reporting as work, a profession, and to the currently failed concept of online advertising revenue for newspapers so that instant reporters can be compensated.

News Reporting of the Future

News reporting of the future begs the question since it is already here, at least in infancy. Will it find a good spot and settle down for a few decades or even centuries?
Perhaps not.
